Aglaia (also spelt Aglaea) is a Goddess of beauty, adornment, glory, magnificence and splendour and a member of The Graces in Greek Mythology.


Genealogy and Family[]

Aglaia was born the youngest of Zeus and Eurynome's triplet daughters, with Euphrosyne and Thalia. She also has many younger sisters including Antheia.

Aglaia went on to become the second wife of Hephaestus with whom she had her four daughters, Eupheme, Eucleia, Euthenia and Philophrosyne.

Role[]

She and the other Graces were born to bring happiness into the world. As a Grace she is also tasked with serving all of the Olympian Gods, especially at celebrations. She is also an attendant of Aphrodite and Hera.

Stories[]

One of the first stories including her, is the creation of Pandora, the first human woman, after Hephaestus, sculpted the new being, all of the Gods gave a gift to her, including the Graces, who with Peitho, gifted Pandora golden necklaces.

Appearance and Personality[]

Like her sisters she is described as a very attractive woman in the prime of her youth and the most beautiful of her sisters. In art, Aglaia has been depicted in either classic Greek robes or nude, by herself or with Euphrosyne and Aglaia.

Aglaia is a benevolent figure, who loves to beautify things and glorify things and beings.

Zeus and Eurynome- Aglaia's parents

Hephaestus- Hephaestus is Aglaea's paternal half brother through Zeus. She became his second wife. The two have a happy marriage and would have four daughters together who are Younger Graces.

Eupheme, Euthenia, Eucleia and Philophrosyne- Aglaia and Hephaestus' four daughters, like their mother, they are Grace goddesses and preside over positive concepts.

Sisters- Aglaia is very close to her sisters who are her best friends.

Trivia[]

She is a beauty Goddess like Aphrodite.

Aglaea's name means 'glory, splendour' and is spelt Αγλαια in Greek.

Aglaea was also known as Cale or Kale spelt Καλη and Calleis (Kalleis) spelt Καλλεις both meaning 'beauty' in Ancient Greek and Charis meaning 'grace' spelt Χαρις in Ancient Greek.

She is an elder Grace.
