Asteria is a Titan goddess, originally she ruled over oracles, constellations and falling and shooting stars, later she would transform into the island Delos- to escape Zeus' advances and would become the goddess of this island too.


Role and Significance[]

Asteria was believed to keep the moon and stars in their place at night, to keep the balance.

Genealogy and Family[]

Asteria is the daughter of the Titans, Coeus, the god of wisdom and Phoebe, the goddess of bright intellect and prophecy and the sister of Leto, the goddess of womanly demure and motherhood and Lelantos, the god of the moving unseen. Asteria's husband is Perses, the Titan god of destruction, with whom she had her only child, Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft and the moon.

Stories[]

Asteria of course joined the other gods during the Gigantomachy, as seen in the Gigantomachy frieze on the Pergamon Altar, Asteria is seen fighting against the Giants next to her mother Phoebe.

Asteria was an inhabitant of Olympus, and like her sister Leto was beloved by Zeus and after Zeus impregnated Leto, he turned his sights towards Asteria, and pursued her, but Asteria transformed into a quail and jumped into the Aegean Sea, to escape him, it was here that she transformed into the island Asteria, later called Delos.

When her sister Leto, was desperate to find a place to birth her children, she fled to Delos, where she birthed her daughter, Artemis and son, Apollo.

Personality[]

Asteria is very empathetic, and values harmony. She is also very imaginative and loves to look at the stars. She has sort of a no-nonsense attitude when something needs to be done, but is usually a mellow person.

Relationships[]

Phoebe and Coeus- The Titans Phoebe and Coeus are Asteria's parents.

Leto- Asteria's sister. They once lived together on Mount Olympus, showing they got along well. Leto later gave birth to her children on Delos.

Perses- Asteria's husband, they had Hecate together.

Hecate- Hecate is Asteria's only child, she and Perses gave Hecate her powers over heaven, earth and sea and raised her to be a powerful figure.

Artemis- Asteria's niece, Delos became her birthplace and patron island.
