Astraea is the Virgin Goddess of justice, innocence, purity, precision and stars in Greek Mythology.
Genealogy and Family[]
Depending on the account, she is either the daughter of the Titan Goddess of the Dawn, Eos and Astraeus, God of the Dawn- or Astraeus alone, alternatively, in another account, she is actually Dike, the goddess of Justice, with her parents being Zeus, King of the Gods, and Themis, the Titan Goddess of divine law and order. During her life, she chose to stay a virgin, having no consort or children.
Stories[]
Astraea is the Goddess of Purity, who once lived on earth, close to the humans, becoming the ambassador of the Golden Age of Humanity. She later fled to the heavens, away from the wickedness of humanity, becoming the constellation Virgo. She is prophesised to make a return to the Earth one day, bringing back the Golden Age.
At some point Hera gave Astraea her powers over astronomical space, after she married Zeus.
She is responsible for breastfeeding the nymph, Beroe, daughter of Aphrodite and Adonis and teaching her law, during her infancy.
Appearance and Personality[]
As a goddess, Astraea appears as a beautiful, youthful maiden. She is a sensitive, wise, purehearted, chaste deity with high morals. Astraea is also closely associated with Dike, the Goddess of Justice and Nemesis, the Goddess of Retribution and serves in the Night goddess Nyx's retinue.
Her sacred symbols include scales, stars, a torch and wings.
