Auxo is a goddess and personification of summer. She is the protector of vegetation and plants, as well as growth and fertility. Auxo is a member of The Horae being in the first triad and also a member of The Graces with Hegemone.


Genealogy and Family[]

Auxo was presumably born the second daughter of Zeus and Themis, she is the sister of Thallo, Carpo, Dike, Eirene, Eunomia, Pherusa, Orthosie and Euporie, who are her fellow members of The Horae.

There were no records of her marrying or having children.

Roles and Significance[]

She is responsible for bringing the season of summer, and allowing the plants and animals to flourish. Collectively she is a member of The Horae and The Graces. She and her the fellow seasonal goddesses Thallo, Carpo, Orithyia and Khione, are also part of the goddess of the turn of the seasons Persephone's entourage.

She was worshipped in Athens alongside Hegemone and Carpo. By the Argives, she was paired with the goddess Damia (Of the Land), describing the two as Kretan maidens--probably priestesses--who were elevated to divinity following their martyrdom at the hands of local peasants.

Trivia[]

The Greek spelling of her name is Αὐξώ, which means increaser (as in plant growth).

Auxo is also known as Auxesia.
