Beroe is the Nymph of the city of Beirut in Phoenicia (modern day Lebanon).
Genealogy and Family[]
Beroe is the daughter of Aphrodite and Adonis, and the sister of Golgos. She was wooed by both Poseidon and Dionysus but ultimately chose to be a lover of Poseidon.
Stories[]
Hermes acted as midwife for Beroe's birth, after which Beroe was sent to the celestial virgin goddess, Astraea, who breastfed the infant, told her words of law, fed her honey and washed her with sacred water. In her youth, she briefly served the goddess Artemis. As she grew up, she was highly regarded as an outstanding beauty and destined to partner with Poseidon. Eros struck her twice with arrows of love and a confrontation took place for her love.

Beroe was described as a beautiful woman like Aphrodite who wore no ornaments or make-up, she was not vain and never examined herself in the mirror. Beroe was a mortal but often her beauty was compared to that of goddesses.

Her name means "of Beirut" and is spelt Βεροη in Greek.
She was also called Amymone.
Beroe is also the name of an Oceanid and a Nereid Nymph. Several mortals according to Greek Mythology were also called Beroe such as a Trojan woman who followed the demi-god hero Aeneas into exile and a nurse of the Theban Princess, Semele, whom Hera took the form of in her plot to kill Semele.
