Hedone is the Olympian goddess of Sensual Pleasure. Her opposites are the Algea, the personifications of pain, in Greek Mythology.

Genealogy and Family[]

Hedone is the daughter of Psyche, Goddess of the Human Soul and Eros, the God of Love. She was conceived whilst her mother was still a human, however was born or became a full goddess, rather than a demi-goddess. Her paternal grandparents are Ares and Aphrodite, whilst her maternal grandparents are mortals and a Greek King and Queen.

Role[]

She is associated with pleasure, enjoyment and delight, and more specifically sensual pleasure.

Stories[]

Aside from her birth a few months after her parents married, there are no other stories of her in Greek Mythology.

Depiction[]

There are very few if any historical depictions of Hedone in Art. Modern art depicts her as a beautiful woman, with a variety of different features, due to a lack of information about her, her appearance is open to more interpretation by Artists.

Hedone means 'Pleasure' in Greek.

Hedone was a minor figure in Greek Mythology and there is very little information about her.

The Goddess had no established cults in Ancient Greece.

Hedone's Roman equivalent is Voluptas.

Hedone's name was given to the philosophical term 'Hedonism' which is the ethical theory that pleasure (in the sense of the satisfaction of desires) is the highest good and proper aim of human life.
